Yu-gi-oh synchro summoning? WTF?

I haven't followed yugioh very well since the end of the second season of GX. I thought the white cards were just for looks I really didn't think they did something. I understand synchro summoning a little but i don't understand why they made it. What was wrong with effect/fusion/ritual? Why did they make it?
