New spelling - pronunciation. Is it me or what ?

I don`t believe I have ever seen "rooves" for roofs. I have noticed, however, increasing use by broadcasters of "wifes, lifes or knifes" instead of "wives, lives and knives". There does seem to be a deliberate policy of new pronunciation about these days.
